Church History
The present building has been on this site since
1970, the old church building (which was situated in the town centre)
having been compulsorily purchased and subsequently demolished by the
local council. However, the church closed in 1990 and the members
joined other local churches.
In 1992 Andrew Love, and his wife Jenny, along with another couple, with the support of the Grace Baptist Association (SE),
re-opened the church as “Larner Road Evangelical Mission”. It was, in
effect, a church planting project, starting “from scratch”. At first
services were held each Sunday morning, and on Sunday evenings there
would be a joint service at Grace Baptist Church in Bexleyheath.
By
1996 Andrew and Jenny, who were now the sole full-time workers, along
with five other faithful attendees, felt that it was now time to
consider constituting a church. And so it was that after much
discussion with the Association, and with those in attendance, on 6th
July 1997, by the grace of God, Northend Baptist Church came into
existence with a membership of seven.
Over
the next couple of years, the Lord blessed the work, although it still
continued to be a small church, numerically. Andrew and Jenny had felt
since their time at Bible College that the Lord was calling them to
overseas missionary work, specifically Brazil, and that burden had
remained on their hearts. They approached the church about it, and
though the members knew they would miss Andrew and Jenny, they
recognised the Lord’s leading and gave their Pastor and his wife their
full support.
Andrew and Jenny were
accepted by UFM for service in Brazil, and by 1999 they had the
required level of financial support pledged from churches around the
country. One problem remained - Andrew did not want to leave the church
without a pastor. A number of men preached at the church “with a view”,
but the Lord didn’t seem to be leading the membership to any of them.
In
May 1999 Andrew was put in contact with Bob Morgan, who had been
pastoring a Baptist church in Mid-Wales, and was at that time seeking a
new pastorate. During a holiday in Gloucestershire Andrew and his
family crossed over the border into Wales and met up with Bob Morgan
and his family in Brecon. When Andrew returned to Erith he proposed to
the church that Bob Morgan be invited to preach for them. This first
preaching engagement was followed by a number of others, and early in
2000 Bob Morgan was formally called to the pastorate, and accepted the
call.
Bob Morgan, with his wife Rosemary,
and their daughters Emily, Abigail, and Hannah, moved to Erith in July
2000, and was inducted as Pastor in September of that year. In the very
same month Andrew and Jenny and their daughters, Hannah, Maria, and
Sarah, moved to Brazil.
In the nine
years that Bob and Rosemary have been at Northend Baptist Church, they
have had much encouragement. There have been 8 baptisms, and in October
2007 their first wedding when the treasurer and deacon Ken Whyte
married Miss Adwoa Halm.
The membership has fluctuated over the last nine years but currently stands at 17 which is more than a 50% increase.
Naturally the church is eager to see its numbers grow, first and
foremost through conversions from amongst the local community, but also
by Christian families moving into the area and wishing to make
Northend Baptist Church their spiritual home. Please pray with us to
this end.
